24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24-25 NIV
You’re in the market to buy a house. What’s more important to you? The beautiful layout and design or the structural foundation? Do you accept (for outer appearance) or inspect (for inner flaws)?
Imagine receiving a storm warning via news in the middle of a beautiful sun-filled day. You might respond with fear if you didn’t build your home and don’t know the foundation on which it lies. Knowing that unstable waves and winds could possibly damage all the beautiful interior designs and surrounding landscape of your home is very unsettling. Or you may be certain that it will be perfectly fine when the storm comes because you know that your home’s foundation is made from durable rock and brick. You know that regardless of the severity of the storm, the foundation will always stand and you can rebuild.
When thinking of your dream home what’s your foundational structure look like?
Let’s take it a step further when we connect the parable of building a house to ourselves, our lives, our goals and aspirations, the same question remains. When thinking of your dream life what’s your foundational structure look like?
First, we must consider the basis of our desires. Like most, the image of our desires can appear solid but when the storms hit, we crumble like the house the foolish man built. If we haven’t included the Word of God in our decision-making life can get complicated and things fall apart.
Have you built a foundation only for sunny days and clear skies, when everything is going your way and your relationships are intact? OR Have you considered the dark days, light showers, thunder and tornado warnings? Have you considered the days when the deals won’t go as you plan or a betrayal may occur from someone close to you?
When you have a foundation that is built on love, honesty, integrity, supporting others, patience and faith; when the storms come, you can:
- Remain persistent in the face of adversity.
- Maintain a deaf ear to naysayers and a blind eye to perpetrators.
- Sustain grace in character even when your integrity and intentions are in question and attacked by others.
When you are building a foundation only for the sunny days, you are (as according to God):
26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash” (Matthew 7:26-27 NIV).
Don’t be so blinded by the outer beauty of your foundational structure that you lose your leverage before you get to the next level. The next level requires a version of you deeply rooted in God and His principles so that no matter what comes your way, you stand like the house built on solid rock.
And if you are at the next level holding on for dear life, the question I ask to you is, “What’s distracting you?” Refocus!
