Can you please introduce yourself and tell us what inspired you to create Bead & Reel?
I’ve loved fashion for literally as long as I can remember. My mom signed me up for sewing classes when I was young, I went to fashion school, and then built a career in fashion design and costume design for film and television. I thought that was what I would spend my life doing, until 2013 when I first learned about the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh, which killed over 1,000 people. I was appalled that the things I was buying and wearing – which I found so beautiful and creative – could have such an ugly side to them. Through this, I learned about sustainable fashion – the kind of fashion that is trying to do good in the world – and it really made me question my role in the fashion industry. I no longer just wanted to focus on the way something looked, but also how it was made, what it was made from, and what it is improving lives and honoring environments. This led me to starting Bead & Reel, a boutique where I could combine my love of fashion with my desire to create a kinder world.
What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your organization?
While I’m a very small business (it’s just me day to day!), I work with dozens of brands, who in turn work with hundreds of artisans, and I am very aware of how my decisions affect everyone along the supply chain. I take this responsibility very seriously when making decisions in every step of my business.
I also think the decisions I make in my personal life are equally important. As the leader of this organization and a respected member of the sustainable fashion community – my daily choices from what I eat to what I wear to how I live set a very important tone to not only my business but also how our entire movement is viewed.
Basically, I view every decision I make as important – and I think this is true for everyone else too, whether they acknowledge it or not – and it’s one of the things I help educate my customers and clients about.
How do you add value to other people’s lives?
The biggest thing I am trying to add into the world is for people to realize how powerful their everyday choices are (which is such an exciting thing to realize!). Their choices impact other people, impact animals, impact our environment, and impact their views about themselves. We have so much power to create change within all of these areas, and if I accomplish nothing else in my lifetime, I hope it’s helping more people realize that.
What do you think about work ethic and what kind of ethics you believe in when working with fashion?
Ethics play a huge role in my business, including work ethic. A strong work ethic is vital in any industry – showing up on time, doing what you say you will do, and doing things completely and well. I think this could also be called “integrity.” Unfortunately, the fashion industry is not currently led with a lot of ethics, however, I believe that can change (it already is!) and it is one of the things I am most focused on with my company.
Do you have a message for humanity?
I wish everyone would realize how powerful each one of us in shaping the world around us. Our choices – of what we buy, what we eat, what we say and what we do – impact so many others, whether we mean to or not. We can use this power to create a more caring, more beautiful world, so let’s do that!
