The beautiful China Machado with the mysterious Ethnicity has passed away yesterday morning, at Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island. One week before her 88th Birthday. Her carreer path was exceptional and I got to know about her from my mother, she was so fascinated by her, Machado was the reason why my mom started reading fashion magazines (especially Harper’s Bazaar mag). She liked when people became the exception to the rule because this elegant woman, was the first non-white woman to appear on the cover of a big American fashion magazine (the 1959 february issue of Harper’s Bazaar).
China Machado (her birth name is Noelie Dasouza Machado) was born in Shanghai. After World War II, she travelled with her family to Argentina, Peru and Spain. She moved to Paris in her early 20s and began modeling for Hubert de Givenchy. She said that she was asked to model for Balenciaga, not being in the town, so they sent her to Givenchy. “They thought I was filling-in for a sick girl, so they grabbed me, put me in clothes, and threw me into the room where they were showing the collection. I barely knew anything about walking like a model, so I just copied the girl in front of me. At the end of the show, gorgeous Givenchy comes up to me and says, ‘Would you like to be in the cabine?’(the house models was named like that). She later worked for Christian Dior and Balenciaga.
After her famous appearance on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in the 1959 February issue (shoot by Richar Avedon), she served as Senior Fashion Editor and then a Fashion Director for the magazine. She once said « I’m practical. I see something, and I do it. »
Machado was once married to French actor Martin LaSalle, they had two daughters Blanche and Emmanuelle and divorced later. And married Riccardo Rosa later.
She is Gone now but leaving behind her a famous inspiring saying : “You can’t worry about aging because that’s the worst thing,”
