I was just checking my instagram feed. Then, I saw a post with a beautiful lady and a name « Gloria Steinem ».
I have Never heard of her. So, I decided to do the Logical Thing. I did my research, which made me fell in love with her inspirational story right away.
She once said « I hope that we will one day change society to fit the unique individual, not the unique individual to fit the society ».
She’s the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Winner of the Annual Women Of The Year Awards.
Born on March 25,1934 in Toledo, Ohio. Gloria Steinem is an American feminist, journalist and social and political activist.
Also, Founder of Ms magazine, Gloria was a columnist for New York Magazine. Moreover, It was the « After Black Power, Women’s Liberation » published article that brought her to national fame. Then, she became nationally recognized as a leader and a spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
We can say that she took the perseverance and activism spirit from her parental Grandmother Pauline Perlmutter Steinem.
She was the chairwoman of the educational committee of the National Woman Suffrage Association, the first woman to be elected to the Toledo Board of Education. And last but not least a leader in the movement for vocational education.
Steinem co-founded in 2005 with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan the Women’s Media Center, which is an organization that work to make women visible and powerful in the media.
Her hope is that young women feel supported and express their talent and understanding.
And that they have the right to have choices. She said that « It’s not so good when we say to kids that you can be anything you want, it’s not true. Much better to say you should be able to become anything you want. And overcoming these obstacles is going to be so satisfying and so much fun, and you are going to have so much company ».
Steinem fight for gender and race equality will be cemented in our history because her name will never be forgotten.
To this day, Steinem dedicated her life to a brighter future for all. And she travels now internationally as an organizer and lecturer, and is a media spokeswoman on issues of equality.
