The desert. The place where I absorbed the most positive energy in my life. A place where I felt reborn and liberated!
Reborn, every time I step into the south of Morocco, every time I see people wrap a beautiful scarf around their heads, tied in an artistic fashionable way as if they were locals. My eyes start shining, and I feel a transformation take hold of my body, preparing itself to absorb the energy of the people and the spirit of the land!
The more we advanced by driving, the more the arid air penetrated my soul. Soon, I was surrounded by sands, mountains, and dunes. I had arrived!
This in fact was my third time visiting this side of the Merzouga, the infamous desert in Morocco! I decided to return and spend my New Year’s Eve here, a place where so many stories have been told and many more will continue. Wanting to cheer up for the upcoming year, I could not think of a better spot for cosy vibes with beautiful souls!
The itinerary, despite having numerous stops, did not disappoint in the truly breathtaking views of nature.
I spent my first night in Kelaat Megouna, at a very simple, yet charming ryad called …
Once I arrived, beautiful people welcomed me, and handed me a cup of their local tea and sweets, treats I enjoyed in front of a traditionally decorated Moroccan fireplace!
I remember that the weather was cold, but their smiles and hospitality to each one of the customers warmed up my heart and soul! I struck up a conversation with some foreigners, and despite our origins, I quickly became fast friends with them on the first night. We sat around like one big, happy, and diverse family, playing, music, singing, admiring the simplicity of the place, and being grateful to be alive and healthy—enjoying this moment! We continued to sing together, before we ate dinner on a large communal plate, sharing food, laughs, and stories. In what was already a wonderful night turned even more lively when the personnel formed a drum circle and asked people to sing and dance, creating a small party with local music, local wine and local vibes!
The following day, I headed to Merzougua!
My desert journey truly commenced the moment I glimpsed upon the silhouette of camels. I felt the dry, cold air blow across my face. And basked in the beauty of the all-encompassing dunes!
Despite the obvious grandeur of the dunes, what surprised me most was seeing the harmony in how each speck of sand, albeit minuscule in itself, came together and composed an awe-inspiring image.
The next stop was Auberge du Sud. To my surprise, I found people arranging huge tents, and the personnel busy managing the logistics for a party!
I soon relaxed listening to local jazz music under the sky littered with more stars than I had ever seen in Merzouga, scintillating the night sky.
After, I laid down my luggage, took a break, and then started another adventure!
I spent an hour riding a camel, being dropped off in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere. It was by far, one of the most wonderful nights I had spent!
People from all over the world coming for the same reason! Gathering, discussing, chatting to one other as if we were friends that had not seen each other for a while. Also, sharing drinks in a festive ambiance! Everyone sang a song from his country of origin, and told each other about their respective rituals….
The Sky was full of stars, and it was a very romantic night in which I celebrated Love with my Inner self!
I was talking to myself, and I was telling my self how much I was proud of the Person I was!
Yes, I did the point with myself and I drew my plan under the stars!
A voice wakes me up at 5 A.M. It belonged to my new Portuguese friend who wanted to invite me to an early yoga session! Yes! I had an hour and a half of Vinyasa yoga in the desert, with a group of people. We were all grateful to our bodies, minds and souls, but also to nature, to the beauty of everything surrounding us, and to God!
I had the chance to experience the most beautiful sunset! Isn’t it beautiful? Yes, I know. I am lucky!
We went back to our lodgings, where we had our luggage, and where the party was going to take place! This time, I went on 4*4, an adrenaline-rushing experience! We stopped again in the middle of nowhere, where I enjoyed a drink after my meditation routine!
This night, was a special one! My New Year’s Eve was about enjoying a Sahraoui Jazz Live band around a campfire with a group of women driving from Spain…These women were searching for themselves as well! They were celebrating and showing gratefulness to Life!
I had the Best 3 days Ever!
Every time I step in the Sahara, I am reborn! Because I feel the beauty of people and things around me, I am willing to go there every year! Rejuvenating me full of positive energy, a spirit I would love to channel and spread. A feeling and Experience I share with people back home!
