Ok so.... maybe she really does work a “9-5” as an Executive Assistant in Boston, which most would consider full time… but she knows that the whole world is her back yard, and life doesn't stop at 5pm!
Taking time for ourselves is one of the most important things we can do for our mental health, wellbeing and overall happiness. Sometimes that time is getting a pedicure, or some retail therapy, but once a day… at least 10 minutes…should be time with yourself in peace. I realize that it may actually be very hard to do when it is not part of a normal routine, so it is important to create a space you WANT to spend time in.
- Find a quiet nook in your home.
It is important that this is somewhere you can go without interruption. It may be a little corner in your bedroom, the guest room, or maybe you have some extra space in that walk in closet.
- Add a shelf, nightstand or platform.
Something you can put your treasures on where they will be safe.
- Do you have comfortable space to sit?
It is a chair, a meditation cushion, or maybe just a soft rug. It is important to feel supported for your meditation with an aligned spine – even if that means laying down.
- Surround yourself with a few things you love.
Is there something you have that inspires you? Add it! My fiancé was thrilled when I took some of my knickknacks from my travels and put them in one space. I have collected Buddhas from all over the world and seeing them all together is so powerful. With that being said, keep the area clean and try to not have it be too cluttered.
Ok so some of us don’t believe in the power and energy of crystals, but even if you don’t believe in them, they are very pretty! Can it hurt to add a few? Rose quartz is my favorite, it gives out positive energy and love for all relationships.
- Add candles, incense or maybe some essential oils.
Aromatherapy can be very soothing. And if you choose to go with candles (or maybe all three!) the fire actually helps me center myself. With a relaxed eye, I gaze at the flame and imagine a mirror image glowing in my heart’s center.
- Let nature in.
Whether you have a plant in your meditation space, a water fountain or decide to just keep the windows open, nature grounds us.
- And for the bonus…! Cleanse your space.
My best friend gave me a Palo Santo stick, which I am obsessed with. Every time I sit to meditate, I light my stick and circle the smoke around my body while saying “Clear all the energy around me. Bring light and love to my practice today and keep me centered and on your journey.” Feel free to improvise!
