Could you please introduce yourself? What do you owe your success to?
My name is Sarah Ashley Longshore and I’m an artist and entrepreneur. I think I owe my success to being confident and really believing that I could accomplish my dreams. You have to have self-love!
How do you refuel creatively, season after season, to deliver fresh and fabulous designs?
I like to go on artist sabbaticals where I really get to be alone with my thoughts. During these sabbaticals, I like to reflect on my experiences. It’s a time for me to be barefoot in a caftan, painting. I go on little day excursions surrounded by nature and I think about my environment and being an American woman. I think about labels and status in our society and my role in all of it. There’s an endless amount of inspiration in this world so that is never an issue for me!
The designs you created are no doubt special, but what was your inspiration while creating them? How do you get inspiration in your everyday life?
I have to think about my own upbringing in the South, which was very conservative. I was raised to be a trophy wife or house wife. Fortunately, I had a father who ultimately believed in me. He instilled the confidence to do anything I ever wanted to do. I have always felt awkward in the world being an artist. Growing up, I never felt like I fit in. When I found art, I was able to create a world that I felt comfortable in. Every time I create a new painting, it makes me brave. Being able to take a thought and turning it into something tangible so I have money to then be able to create more… is such an exciting thing! How can I not be inspired?
How would you define empowerment? What does it signify for you? How do you empower yourself?
I think empowerment is simply having unbridled confidence. Being able to say that I am completely and totally happy with who I am. I love me some me. I know I’m not perfect. I may not fit the mold of what society says I should be, but I am completely happy in my own skin. I’m happy with my life. To me, that is very empowering. To be comfortable in your own skin is the foundation to being able to conquer the world! I empower myself with not being too hard on myself but at the same time putting pressure on myself. There has to be a certain amount of pressure. You don’t get a diamond without pressure. I think pressure and adversity are both good things. They are opportunities to learn! By continuing to push myself into new things, it’s extremely empowering and exciting! That is what life is all about. You want to continue to be a student.
