Lingerie…Some of my favorite pieces in my closet are lingerie. And I always wish that I could wear and show off my lingerie more. Pretty and delicate lingerie are like works of art, and they deserve to be seen outside of just the bedroom. It seems wasteful to just wear gorgeous lingerie under your clothes, so I’ve changed the rules and started incorporating lingerie into my wardrobe as clothes. If you’re feeling apprehensive about this, hopefully my 4 styling tips below on how to wear lingerie outside of the bedroom will change your mind!
The Pretty Balconette Bra: Layering is Your Best Friend
Everyone has a fancy bra or bralette with pretty details that deserve to shine. When it comes to styling a bra, layering is my number one styling trick. For colder weather, I like to layer a balconette style bra or bralette over a black turtleneck or top for a sophisticated and feminine outfit. A balconette style bra is the easiest type to layer as it gives you more coverage and almost looks like a crop top when worn outside of the bedroom setting. The key is to find a layering piece that works with the style and color of your bra. In the photos below, I layered a dark green bra over a black crop top for a seamless look. You probably can’t even tell it’s a bra right?! For warmer weather, I would just style the bra under a kimono or oversized cardigan for a boho chic, festival vibe.
The Sexy Bodysuit: Go Bold or Go Home
A sexy lace bodysuit can easily transition into a top for date night. Things to look for in a bodysuit that would allow for it to work outside of the bedroom are a fabric that typically is used for clothes, such as velvet, and of course making sure the bodysuit does cover all the necessary areas. The biggest tip I can give you went it comes to wearing a bodysuit is to be bold and own it. Wear it with confidence and no one will think twice that you’re wearing lingerie, they’ll just be thinking how good you look. One of my favorite ways to style a bodysuit is with jeans and a fur vest for a luxuriously sexy city look.
The Silk Pajama Top: Perfect as a Delicate Camisole
Your silk pajama top can be more than just pretty loungewear. For a springtime outfit, it can also be the perfect Cami under a blazer or light jacket. When you’re looking for a super delicate top to complete an outfit but can’t seem to find one. Consider your silk PJ’s tops as an alternative. I would recommend just sticking to your silk PJ’s to wear outside of the bedroom as they can look sophisticated. I would not recommend wearing your cotton PJ’s in an outfit. Also do pay attention to the color of your PJ’s – a darker color like blue will make it look more like a top than like lingerie. And pair it with a sharp contrasting color for an elevated look.
The Corset: A Victorian Touch to Any Outfit
Last but not least is the corset, traditionally known for romantic nights in the bedroom. I left this piece for last because from my experience it is the hardest to style in an outfit outside of the bedroom.
Because of the proportions of a corset and the hard casing, nailing the silhouette is key in achieving a successful outfit.
After trial and error, I find that it is easiest to style a corset with a high-waisted bottom. Since corsets hit at the hip, it’s hard to style with normal clothes. So it is most flattering to pair the corset with a high-waisted pant or skirt that covers up part of the corset so that it looks more like a bustier top. Another tip is to layer the corset over a lace turtleneck for a soft, feminine look. A corset is a great piece if you’re looking to add a hint of romance to your outfit.
